The Usury Tower

A poem asking Who Carries Power by Michael Joseph Farrelly

When truth is slim and lies are fat
Conformity is rife
We're all at pains to out-rat
The rodent wheel of life

But who rules the roost
Who carries the power
Whose neck to be noosed
Off the usury tower

The fetters of fiefdom
Chain the mind to believe
Your futile fake freedom
Is your only reprieve

You'll still vote when they tell you
How pathetic you are
They'll say you're free too
As they scoff down the jar

You think you have freedom
But you just cannot see
Your mind lives in serfdom
Most don't want to be free

You say freedom of speech
To a lesser degree
But what ears can you reach
If not pay a large fee?

So who rules the roost
Who carries the power
Whose neck to be noosed
Off the usury tower

Don't look left or look right
Just look up at my class
Celebrating your plight
My raised champagne glass

I'm 1,000's of years
War, famine and tears
I'm all of your fears
Yet your hope still cries cheers

'Cos I rule the roost
I carry the power
My neck can't be noosed
I'm the usury tower

"The Usury Tower" - My Inspiration

Disbelief. The unquestioning masses. And, the ongoing silencing of critical dissident voices.
Or in the words of Roman historian Tacitus:
“If you would know who controls you see who you may not criticise”.
