The Lost Art Of Expression

The Lost Art Of Expression
A poem about every day interactions and the social disconnect in society by Michael Joseph Farrelly
The old man smiled and said hello
A stoical smirk returned
The grin and bear of life's woe
Dressed up as success yearned
Undeterred, he smiled again
This time with a nod and wink
A man just stared, are you insane?
What right have you to blink
The lost art of expression
A former social style
Since when was grunting fashion
Instead of just a smile
The old man sat to read his book
And observe the world go by
People rushed, no time to talk
All living in their lie
The fantasies they live
Is real life in denial
Chasing shadows that will give
Biased sentence without trial
The lost art of expression
A former social style
When sinister faked passion
Replaces a real smile
The old man stood and looked around
As a stray cat it came near
He smiled and reached out his hand
The most friendly purr to hear
The cat it had expression
A sincere social style
There was no fake compassion
Just mutual natural smile
The old man shook his head and walked
Why have people lost their way
It used to be that we talked
To pass the time of day
Now time is of the essence
Though minutes don't run faster
Only in people's pretence
They do think haste's the master
The old man had expression
A distinct social style
Lost for this generation
This wise old man's real smile
Great quotes are not where you find great wisdom. It's where you share this knowledge that counts

"The Lost Art Of Expression" - My Inspiration
This poem's not about young people, they know how to smile.
It's the grown ups who lost their lives to coerced compromised compliance. They're the ones to grieve.
May their dreams and imaginations RIP despite cognitive dissonant regret.
